Breaking: Japan Proposes One-Year Postponement For Tokyo Olympics

Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike have proposed a one-year postponement of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in a conference callÂ with International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach.

Abe said Bach agreed “100%” with this proposal, which would have to be approved by the IOC’s Executive Board.

The Olympics have never been postponed in history. The modern Olympics has been canceled only during wartime. A final decision would have to be announced and made by the IOC and Bach.

Veteran International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound told USA TODAY Sports Monday afternoon that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are going to be postponed, likely to 2021, with the details to be worked out in the next four weeks.

â€œOn the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,â€ Pound said in a phone interview. â€œThe parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.â€

Pound, a Canadian who has been one of the most influential members of the IOC for decades, said he believes the IOC will announce its next steps soon.

â€œIt will come in stages,â€ he said. â€œWe will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense.â€
