Read ninemsn Australia’s controversial men’s freestyle relay team will be punished by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) on Friday. The six Australian men’s freestyle swimmers face sanctions including loss of AOC funding as a result of their ill-fated bonding session before last year’s London Olympics. The swimmers – Eamon Sullivan, Matt Targett, James Magnussen, James Roberts, Tommaso D’Orsogna and Cameron McEvoy – have already been fined and given suspended sentences by Swimming Australia. It nearly claimed the life of competitive swimmer 15-year-old Chris Pilotte, during practice with a Baltimore County swim team last year. “They realized that I was under water and they pulled me out and did CPR,” Pilotte said. After swimming for 45 minutes, the team began vigorously practicing underwater breath control. It was on the second lap of a set that Pilotte went to the bottom of the pool for about 45 seconds.

In a press release today, FINA reports that no anti-doping rule violation was registered at the 15th FINA World Championships, held from July 19 to August 4, 2013 in Barcelona (ESP), after a total of 820 tests. The numbers of the Anti-Doping programme for this competition included: IN COMPETITION 378 urine tests (including 69 EPO screenings) 84 blood tests PRE COMPETITION 358 blood tests (in the frame of the Athlete Biological Passport)
