As you might have guessed, Pál’s silver medal in the 1500 freestyle put a spanner in the works for me, yesterday evening, but here is a quick recap of that night’s finals. The complete result list is here. We are happy! :-)

    Men’s 1500 freestyle

Home favorite Mads Glæsner took the race out hard, but faded when those in the lanes next to him took over. Our guy Pál Joensen led for a few hundred meters in the middle of the race, until Hungary’s Gergely Gyurta took over and won in 14:30.26, Pál second in 14.35.99 and Italy’s Gabriele Detti third in 14:36.43.

    Women’s 400 freestyle

No doubt here, Spain’s Mireia Belmonte led from start to finish, to win in impressive 3:56.14, home favorite Lotte Friis second in 3:58.35 and Italy’s Federica Pellegrini third in 3:58.90.

    Women’s 100 individual medley

Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte showed her form wit a 57.68 win, ahead of Hungary’s world record holder Katinka Hosszu in 57.96, Great Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor third in 58.26.

    Men’s 200 butterfly

Youngster Velimir Stjepanovic from Serbia the new European champion in 1:51.27, ahead of Poland’s Pawel Korzeniowski in 1:51.36 and Russia’s Nikolay Skvortsov in 1:51.62.

    Men’s 100 freestyle

Russia’s Vladimir Morozov secured his fourth medal at these championships, winning in a time of 45.96 ahead of compatriot Daniil Izotov in 46.41 and Italy’s Marco Orsi in 46.49.

    Women’s 50 backstroke

The Czech Republic got its first gold medal at these championships, with Simona Baumrtova winning in 26.26, Poland’s Aleksandra Urbanczyk the silver winner in 26.31 and Sweden’s Michelle Coleman the bronze winner in 26.67. Home favorite Mie Ø. Nielsen a hundredth of a second from the bronze medal.

    Men’s 50 breaststroke

Yay, my money was safe, betting on Slovenia’s Damir Dugonjic to win this race, his time 26.21 ahead of France’s Giacomo Perez Dortona in 26.55 and Ireland’s Barry Murphy in 26.56.

    Mixed 4×50 freestyle

Russia’s Sergey Fesikov, Vladimir Morozov, Rozaliya Nasretdinova and Veronika Popova the gold winners in a new world record time of 1:29.53. Italy silver winners in 1:30.26 and the Netherlands bronze winners in 1:30.62.
