Germany’s Britta Steffen improved her 100 freestyle from 52.22 on the 1st day of Rome, to 52.07 on the 6th. USA’s Aaron Piersol became the first man under 1:52 in the 200 backstroke, clocking 1:51.92 where his world record was 1:53.08. Netherland’s Marleen Veldhuis set a new 50 butterfly world record in the first semifinal, with a time of 25.28 where her world record was 25.33. And then Sweden’s Therese Alshammar improved this to 25.07 in the second semifinal. Serbia’s Milorad Cavic set a new 100 butterfly world record, with a time of 50.01 where Phelps’ world record was 50.22. And USA’s men improved their 4×200 freestyle world record, from 6:58.56 to 6:58.55.

USA’s Ryan Lochte set a new 200 individual medley world record, with a time of 1:54.10 where Phelps’ world record from Beijing was 1:54.23. Canadian Annamay Pierse set a new world record in the 200 breaststroke semifinal, swimming 2:20.12 where Rebecca Soni’s world record was 2:20.22. Brazil’s Cesar Cielo Filho became first man under 47 second in the 100 freestyle, clocking 46.91 seconds where the world record of Eamon Sullivan was 47.05. Australia’s Jessicah Schipper beat the 2:04.14 world record of Mary Descenza from yesterday, with a time of 2:03.41. Australia’s Christian Sprenger beat Kosuke Kitajima’s 200 breaststroke world record, with a time of 2:07.31 where Kitajima’s world record was 2:07.51. China’s Jing Zhao set a new 50 backstroke world record, with a time of 27.06 where Anastasia Zueva’s world record from the semifinal was 27.38. And finally, the Chinese women set a new 4×200 freestyle world record, with a time of 7:42.08 where Australia’s world record was 7:44.31.

Germany’s Daniela Samulski set a new world record in the first semifinal of the 50 backstroke, with a time of 27.39, before Anastasia Zueva bettered this in the second semifinal, with a time of 27.38. The old world record was 27.61. Michael Phelps demolished his own 200 butterfly world record, with a time of 1:51.51, where his world record from Beijing was 1:52.03. First man under 1:52, wearing only Speedo LZR leggings. Local favourite Federica Pellegrini bettered her own world record in the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:52.98, where her world record was 1:53.67. South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh bettered his own 50 breaststroke world record from the semifinal on day 3, from 26.74 to 26.67. And China’s Lin Zhang erased the epic 800 freestyle world record of Grant Hackett, with a time of 7:32.12, where Hackett’s world record from 2005 was 7:38.65.

Germany’s Paul Biedermann beat Michael Phelps with a new world record time of 1:42.00, where Phelps swam 1:43.22. Phelps’ world record was 1:42.96, before this. Britain’s Gemma Spofforth set a new world record in the 100 backstroke, with a time of 58.12, where Russia’s Anastasia Zueva in the semifinal set a world record time of 58.48.
