“I spotted the shark straight away as there was a big bait ball of fish and as I got closer I could see it was also circling the diver in the water,” Woods says. “The diver was fending the shark off and poking it with his spear gun. The shark then went after his float that is attached to the diver. He was charging it and trying to bite it, thrashing it about.”

Roxie Mirabelle Forbes was only 6 when she drowned in the shallow end of her summer camp’s pool, and her parents have devoted themselves to trying to make sure other families don’t suffer the same loss. Her dad urges parents to carefully consider where they send their kids to summer camp. Her parents say four camp staffers were on lifeguard duty that day but didn’t notice the child floating face down in the water. After another counselor saw her, she was pulled from the pool, but it was too late. The summer camp denies any wrongdoing.

Next Saturday, July 31st, the 18th annual “Swim Teal Lake: Benefit for Diabetes” is on.

If you’d like to participate in the iconic swim, registration is open until the morning of.

All donations go to the U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network to strengthen diabetes care and support across the U.P.

They’ve raised over two hundred thousand dollars the last 17 years.

This year’s race will consist of the traditional 2.25 mile swim across Teal Lake and a short ¼ mile swim.

The “Short–n–Sweet” swim will be a 1/4 mile event open to all ages!

It’s a great intro to open water swimming.

With that said—swimmers will be assisted by volunteer kayakers to keep them safe. And—they are still looking for volunteer kayakers for the event.

Also, the West End Health Foundation is their major sponsor and is doing a “Match Grant” for all swimmer donations (up to $15,000).

*Note: UPDON is a program partner with UPCAP Services.
