  • Denmark selects 4 to Barcelona 2013 World Championships squad

The Danish Swimming Federation has announced their preliminary selection for the 2013 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, to be the four individually qualified Jeanette Ottesen Gray, Lotte Friis, Mie Østergaard Nielsen and Rikke Møller Pedersen, plus Pernille Blume selected for the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay. The final selection has to wait partly because two swimmers have been granted dispensation, to try to qualify at a meet in the US on 11-13 April 2013. My best guess is that that would be the 2013 Arena Grand Prix at Mesa, where Anders Lie Nielsen is competing. See svoem.org.

  • Lance Armstrong formally banned from U.S. Masters Swimming events

A few hours after FINA, the global organization that oversees aquatic sports, sent a letter to U.S. Masters Swimming recommending that Lance Armstrong be denied permission to swim in a Masters meet this weekend, USMS has banned the former cyclist from any future Masters swim meets.

So that would be the news breaking that he would race, FINA then objecting, Lance withdrawing and then U.S. Masters Swimming banning him, all in a few hours.

The internet is abuzz but confused.

The Pelagic Life crew went on another exploratory mission to photograph an unusual pelagic traveler. The salt water crocodiles of Banco Chinchorro are believed to have traveled over 20 NM from white sandy beaches in Riviera Maya to this forgotten reef system.

The two-time Olympic 1,500m freestyle gold medallist believes Australian swimming has not been irrevocably damaged by the revelations of athletes abusing prescription drugs, alcohol and curfews during last year’s London Games.

But the findings of a damning review into Australia’s Olympic swimming team should act as the catalyst for a greater emphasis on performance, he said.

“The guys who are involved in the team now need to take on board the lessons,” Perkins told reporters.

“Grow up a little bit and get on with the job that they’re there to do, which is to be the world’s best athletes, not celebrity show ponies.”

U.S. Masters Swimming Executive Director Rob Butcher says Armstrong has decided not to try to swim in the Masters South Central Zone Swimming Championships at the University of Texas this weekend after swimming’s international governing body raised objections. Armstrong had been entered in three distance events. But Switzerland-based FINA sent a letter to U.S. Masters officials Thursday saying that the event is under the umbrella of the World Anti-Doping Code and subject to the lifetime ban given to Armstrong by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Butcher said that Armstrong withdrew on his own Thursday morning.
