National swimmers continue to reach CARIFTA qualifying standard times as the Barbados Aquatic Sports Association (BASA) Long Course National Championships entered its penultimate day of the competition at the aquatic center.

Michael Urgo, a Wheeler senior on the Fitch co-op team, was named Swimmer of the Meet at the Eastern Connecticut Conference boys’ swimming championship.

Riley Gaines, a 12-time All-American, and three-time Southeastern Conference champion, gained national attention last year after she tied with male swimmer Lia Thomas in the 200 freestyle at the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships. Despite tying with Thomas, Gaines says she was told the trophy would go to Thomas for “photo purposes.”
