The family of a 12-year-old Limpopo girl who drowned at Ga-Maja, outside Polokwane, Limpopo, on Christmas Day, has called for rural children to be taught how to swim in her memory. Sharon Bopape drowned after being carried away by a strong current while seeking refuge from the rain under a bridge. Her body was recovered in a local stream a day later, during a search by the community.
