In more record-breaking news A Chilean swimmer has undertaken the longest swim ever by a person in Antarctic waters.

Wearing only a standard bathing suit Bárbara Hernández made the swim on Sunday in icy waters just off Greenwich Island near the Antarctic Peninsula.

She swam 2.5 kilometers in 45 minutes in water temperatures of just 2.2 degrees Celsius. Her record is now being validated.

Nicknamed the “Ice Mermaid” Hernández said the feat is meant to raise awareness of the need to protect the Southern and Antarctic oceans.

The 37-year-old psychologist has also set records and world firsts in the Beagle Channel and Magellan Strait on the tip of South America.
