This is not what I usually do on this site, but feel that I have to speak out, as president of a tiny swimming federation, and as a fellow human being.

Despite all good efforts made by federations and clubs around the world, canceling major meets and urging everyone to take care, I suspect that athletes are still trying to keep in shape, in case the Olympics happen.

This has to stop and can stop if the International Olympic Committee acts responsibly now!

Yes, I understand that there might be a big bill to pick up, but after all that is only money. I will go as far as to say, that if the IOC ever should have to go bankrupt, this would the most honorable reason. To save lives.

As soon as the Olympics are gone from our schedule, it should be natural for at least Olympic trials and qualification meets to be canceled, or morphed into meets that are maybe less significant but can be still fun and festive.

There is so much time being lost at the moment, trying to find solutions to a problem that really doesn’t have to be.

And there are so many human ressources being spent that would be to much better use right now figuring how to help out from within quarantine.

This has to happen now, in order for us all to try to get this pandemic under control, and hopefully lose as few lives as possible.

Never mind this sports season, it is pretty much already gone, at least if you judge it from the point of fairness and sportsmanship

Let’s take a break and weather this out, to meet again afterward in a true Olympic spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

Yours sincerely
