A swimmer in Australia has died after suffering a puncture wound to his lower abdomen in a stingray attack, according to reports.

The 42-year-old man, identified as Nicolas Ricketts, was stung by the stingray on Saturday while swimming at Lauderdale Beach in Tasmania, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Ricketts was close to the shore and had been in the water alone at the time of the attack.

The victim’s friends pulled him to shore, but were unsuccessful in their attempts to resuscitate him before emergency responders arrived.

Ricketts, who worked as a plumber and had served in the Australian Navy, died from cardiac arrest shortly after the incident, the news outlet reported.
