A young man trying out for a lifeguard position died while taking part in swimming trials at Pilgrim Lake this morning, Orleans Fire Department officials said.

The man slipped beneath the surface at 8:49 a.m. and was found unconscious by an Orleans Fire Department diver in 10 to 15 feet of water about half an hour later, Orleans Deputy Fire Chief Geof Deering said.
