In a revealing new interview with Sports Illustrated, Olympic hero Michael Phelps spoke about his time in a rehabilitation facility, his regained appreciation for swimming … and the dark moments of his life following a 2014 arrest for driving under the influence.
In the interview, Phelps recalls hiding out at home following his arrest, when a police officer pulled him over in Maryland going 84 mph in a 45-mph zone. Phelps failed two field sobriety tests and was given a breathalyzer. He blew .14, which is over the .08 legal limit, and was arrested.
Days later, hiding out in his home, Phelps had his lowest moments.

News organizations were camped nearby, looking for a glimpse of Phelps, who did not leave the town house for four days. “I was in a really dark place,†Phelps says. “Not wanting to be alive anymore.â€
