A group of young swimmers on the Grand Strand got a chance to learn from an Olympic athlete Friday.

2012 Olympic silver medalist Elizabeth Beisel is in town for a clinic with the Myrtle Beach Riptides.

The Riptides are at the beginning of their season, and Coach James Smith wanted to do something to get them excited.

He says he chose Beisel because of her experience, but also because of her perseverance throughout her career.

“We wanted a swimmer who could related best to these young athletes,” Smith said. “Elizabeth has had the ups, Elizabeth has had the downs, and something that these kids could relate to. We could have asked athletes that are theoretically good at every meet and win every event, but that doesn’t mean they can relate like Elizabeth can.”
