Alex Buehlow, a Special Olympics gold medallist from Bright, attempted to swim across Lake Ontario on August 13, 2013.

The 18-year-old’s valiant effort ended when he was pulled from the chilly water, possibly suffering from hypothermia, about 6 p.m. — three kilometres short of finishing his Waves of Hope Lake Ontario Crossing in Toronto. The swim began at Niagara-on-the Lake.

Diagnosed with autism at age four, he aimed to raise $100,000 for Three to Be, a charity that funds research into children’s neurological disorders.
