Swimming New Zealand’s high performance environment was today described by an independent Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) review as negative and with a culture of distrust and lack of confidence in its leadership.
The role of SNZ’s high performance manager Jan Cameron has come under particular fire, to the point where one of the 5 recommendations is a review of that position. She apparently rejects the report’s findings as ‘unfair and inaccurate’.
Swimming New Zealand has accepted the review, and established a committee to review the structure and environment of its High Performance program. This is in return welcomed by SPARC Chief Executive Peter Miskimmin.
SNZ probably had no other option than to accept, since SPARC has the power to withhold the public funding from July that SNZ receives in the lead-up to the London Olympics. If this funding was to be cut prematurely, estimates suggest SNZ could survive only three months before regional cash reserves were tapped into.
