Swim instructor Paulana Lamonier believes harmful stereotypes distract from tackling the real causes of the lack of diversity in the pool: there has never been space for the Black community to learn how to swim. Lamonier founded “Black People Will Swim” to bring affordable and accessible swim lessons to the community.

  1. Lamonier was determined to prove herself on the school’s swim team, so she diligently attended swim practice during the off-season. Her commitment drew the attention of her coaches, who encouraged her to enter the teaching profession.
