A 14-year-old Chinese diver obliterated the competition at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre with her three perfect-10 scores to capture a gold medal in dominant fashion in the Olympic 10m platform final on August 5, 2021. Quan Hongchan, the youngest member of China’s team at the Tokyo Games, racked up a stunning overall score of 466.20 points, breaking the previous Olympic record of 447.70. The newest diver in a long line of Chinese Olympic champions took up the sport as a way to financially support her mother who has an illness that requires year-round treatment. Chinese fans have been inspired by her story of a rise above poverty to Olympic history.
