During the 1936 Olympic Games, the swimming stadium held about 17 000 visitors. Its capacity was larger than today, as additional temporary stands were built in the north and south. Thus, the audience framed the swimming arena on four sides and in some cases almost up to the edge of the pool. Eyewitnesses have enthusiastically spoken of the tense and thrilling atmosphere.
