A man has been attacked by a shark during a morning surf near Wollongong.

Paramedics attended to the man, 59, just after 8am on Friday at Windang Beach.

The surfer paddled himself to shore where an off-duty life guard and others assisted him.

Three crews and the AeroMed team attended to the man, who had significant bites on his left foot.

The bite went through to the bone and the man sustained severe ligament damage, an ambulance spokeswoman said.
