Shaine Casas, a 2018 McAllen High graduate, took first place in the 100-meter backstroke at a national swim meet Aug. 3 in California. He also finished second in the 200-m backstroke. His 100-m time (52.72 seconds) topped Olympic champion Michael Phelps’ time in that event back in 2007. Casas hopes to become an Olympian himself one day.
