A South Florida non-profit organization is pushing for water safety a day after a little boy lost his life in a swimming pool.
Kindergartners are learning swimming skills that can help save their lives at SWIM Central, a non-profit organization that focuses on water safety to prevent any more tragedies. “Should they find themselves in a situation, they’re in the water, they will self rescue,” said SWIM Central manager Jay Sanford. “If they fall in the water, they know to roll over on their back. They know to yell for help, know how to get back to the wall.”

At least eight young lives were lost to drowning so far this year in both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. The most recent incident happened on Wednesday night at a Coral Springs home. Police said 3-year-old Brandon Paul St. Onge was riding his tricycle by the pool, and it appears, he fell inside the pool with it. “It seems like every week we’re losing children,” said Sanford.
“We’ve lost so many children at such a short amount of time this year, it’s really disturbing,” said Sanford. “It’s 100 percent preventable. Barriers in place, these incidents are preventable, and that’s really what devastates the family.”
