Michael Phelps said in Mesa on Wednesday his love of swimming and thirst for competition led him to come out of retirement.

The 22-time Olympic medalist will compete in the Arena Grand Prix on April 24 to 26 at the Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa.

Phelps told reporters he will be competing in the 100-meter butterfly and the 50-meter butterfly.

“I’m doing this because I want to,” Phelps said. “Nobody is forcing me to do this. I want to be back in the water.”
