What to expect

Danes hope that Friday 13 December 2013 will be the great Danish night at the Herning 2013 European Short Course Championships, featuring Lotte Friis in the 800 freestyle, Rikke Møller Pedersen in the 200 breaststroke, Mie Ø. Nielsen in the 100 backstroke and Jeanette Ottesen Gray in the 100 freestyle and/or 50 butterfly. This doesn’t necessarily mean that we will see the best day of swimming tomorrow at the Danish Short Course Champs in Gladsaxe, despite of them swimming the same events as when in Herning, as the swimmers mentioned are so dominant that they should be able to just cruise to their qualification tomorrow. But then we have the battle between defending 400 IM champ Chris Christensen and day 1’s Danish 200 IM record setter Viktor B. Bromer, a possible tussle between Jeanette Ottesen Gray, Mie Ø. Nielsen and Pernille Blume in the 100 freestyle, and Andreas Schiellerup and Magnus Jákupsson recently only one tenth of a second from the Danish record in the 50 backstroke.

  7. Martin Nielsen (1996) 8:27.51

  8. Marcus Krøyer Svendsen (1997) 8:27.59

Prediction

This should be an easy victory for Nordic record holder and defending Danish champ Pál Joensen. Don’t think it will be so fast though, with it not being a Herning 2013 event and all.

European Record Senior: Mireia Belmonte (1990) 7:59.34 2013-08-10

  7. Maj Howardsen (1997) 8:55.95

  8. Emma Wael (1993) 8:57.99

Prediction

Lotte Friis will win as easily as Pál Joensen, and this time it counts as qualification. Only one other can qualify, so the race is on for second spot and that time standard of 8:46.36.

Men’s 400 individual medley

European Record Senior: Laszlo Cseh (1985) 3:57.27 2009-12-11

  2. Viktor B. Bromer (1993) 4:09.89

  3. Anton Ørskov Ipsen (1994) 4:16.05

  5. Christian V. Rasmussen (1996) 4:25.78

  7. Karim Møller (1994) 4:32.69

  8. Jonathan Müller (1997) 4:33.65

Prediction

A great duel between Chris Christensen and Viktor B. Bromer, that I based on the result in the 200 IM on day 1 think will fall in favor of Viktor. Anton Ørskov Ipsen did well in the 400 freestyle, so I’m pretty sure that those three will all go under the Herning 2013 time standard of 4:15.83.

Women’s 200 breaststroke

European Record Senior: Rikke Møller Pedersen (1989) 2:15.93 2013-08-11
Nordic Record Senior: Rikke Møller Pedersen (1989) 2:15.93 2013-08-11

Favorites

  1. Rikke Møller Pedersen (1989) 2:15.93

  2. Julie Leth-Espensen (1992) 2:28.10

  3. Louise B. Dalgaard (1990) 2:29.40

  4. Ida Schütt (1996) 2:31.91

  5. Anna Wermuth (1996) 2:34.09

  6. Josefine Pedersen (1999) 2:34.29

  7. Anne-Sofie Lindblad (1997) 2:34.55

  8. Anna Puggaard (1996) 2:34.61

Prediction

Yet another dominating cruise victory, the next two need to manage at least 2:26.18 to get on the Herning 2013 roster in this event. Julie Leth-Espensen faded a bit in the 200 IM, about two seconds compared to her entry time, so maybe Ida Schütt has a chance to make the team?

Men’s 100 breaststroke

European Record Senior: Robin van Aggele (1984) 56.29 2009-12-11
Nordic Record Senior: Alexander Dale Oen (1985) 57.05 2011-12-09
Danish Record Senior: Chris Christensen (1988) 58.78 2009-12-19
Danish Record Junior: Morten Klarskov (1992) 1:00.48 2009-12-10
2012 Champ Senior: Chris Christensen (1988) 59.75
Herning 2013 Time Standard: 1:00.41

Favorites

  1. Morten Klarskov (1992) 59.65

  2. Niklas Hedegaard (1990) 1:00.15

  3. Emil Klingberg (1987) 1:00.70

  4. Viktor Christensen (1995) 1:02.29

  5. Peter Skotte (1991) 1:02.38

  6. Mikkel Hounsgaard (1993) 1:02.96

  7. Mads Larsen (1994) 1:03.19

  8. Julius Skaarup Schmidt (1988) 1:03.23

Prediction

Right, two already faster entry times than the Herning 2013 requirement, and the third one close. Not that big a time difference between them, so it might become a great race.

Women’s 100 freestyle

European Record Senior: Francesca Halsall (1990) 51.19 2009-11-22
Nordic Record Senior: Jeanette Ottesen (1987) 51.90 2009-12-20

Danish Record Junior: Mie Østergaard Nielsen (1996) 53.55 2011-11-26
2012 Champ Senior: Kelly Riber Rasmussen (1994) 55.07
Herning 2013 Time Standard: 55.41

Favorites

  1. Jeanette Ottesen (1987) 52.09

  2. Mie Ø. Nielsen (1996) 53.07

  3. Pernille Blume (1994) 54.04

  4. Kelly Riber Rasmussen (1994) 55.07

  5. Julie Levisen (1997) 55.15

  6. Pernille Juel (1994) 55.17

  7. Julie Brøndum Petersen (1994) 55.95

  8. Maja Nielsen (1996) 56.89

Prediction

Jeanette Ottesen Gray has clearly the better time on paper, but we are not totally tapered, and Mie Ø. Nielsen is a great (and young) racer. Maybe that shoulder niggle will hold Mie back a bit (nope, Mie cancelled this race), but then there is also Pernille Blume. The Herning 2013 time standard is absolutely no problem.

Men’s 100 butterfly

European Record Senior: Evgeny Korotyshkin (1983) 48.48 2009-11-07
Nordic Record Senior: Lars Frölander (1974) 50.44 2000-03-17

2012 Champ Senior: Viktor B. Bromer (1993) 52.15
Herning 2013 Time Standard: 52.66

Favorites

  1. Viktor B. Bromer (1993) 52.15

  2. Daniel Steen Andersen (1995) 52.44

  3. Søren Dahl (1993) 53.15

  4. Daniel Svane Halkjær (1991) 53.41

  5. Jonas Sørensen (1990) 53.43

  6. Martin Terp Olesen (1994) 53.99

  7. Sebastian Strandberg (1994) 54.38

  8. Lasse Schrøder Jakobsen (1993) 54.93

Prediction

Now we are in Viktor B. Bromer territory, and he is in shape. They need to swim 52.66 or faster, the two first have already done that before this meet, and the next ones just have to step up.

Women’s 100 backstroke

European Record Senior: Kseniya Moskvina (1989) 56.36 2009-12-11
Nordic Record Senior: Mie Østergaard Nielsen (1996) 56.73 2012-12-14

Danish Record Junior: Mie Østergaard Nielsen (1996) 57.57 2011-12-09
2012 Champ Senior: Mie Østergaard Nielsen (1996) 57.57
Herning 2013 Time Standard: 59.99

Favorites

  1. Mie Ø. Nielsen (1996) 56.73

  2. Isabella K. Sørensen (1994) 1:01.40

  3. Sarah Bro (1996) 1:01.45

  4. Emilie Beckmann (1997) 1:01.48

  5. Yasmin Saud Abdulkadir (1994) 1:01.53

  6. Caroline Ericsen (1998) 1:01.54

  7. Kristina Thomsen (1991) 1:01.77

  8. Stine Raaby Jensen (1995) 1:02.20

Prediction

A cruise victory for Mie Østergaard Nielsen, the rest should just focus on going faster than that Herning 2013 requirement of 59.99, and beating each other. Might just be 1 or 2 who qualify, though.

Men’s 50 backstroke

European Record Senior: Stanislav Donets (1983) 22.74 2010-11-26
Nordic Record Senior: Lavrans Solli (1992) 23.51 2012-11-23

2012 Champ Senior: Andreas Schiellerup (1993) 24.60
Herning 2013 Time Standard: 24.56

Favorites

  1. Andreas Schiellerup (1993) 24.47

  2. Magnus Jákupsson (1994) 24.49

  3. Morten Bak Hansen (1995) 24.87

  4. Lasse Vestergaard (1991) 25.15

  5. Anders Jensen (1987) 25.38

  6. Mads Knoblauch (1993) 25.75

  7. Anders Møller (1991) 25.76

  8. Kevin Witt Christensen (1995) 26.16

Prediction

This will be interesting. Andreas Schiellerup’s entry time is his 24.47 from the European SC in Chartres last year, and Magnus Jákupsson’s 24.49 from the Danish team championships in April. The Danish record is ‘only’ Schiellerup’s 24.35 from the Szczecin European SC in 2011. The Herning 2013 time standard 24.56.

Women’s 50 butterfly

European Record Senior: Therese Alshammar (1977) 24.38 2009-11-22

Danish Record Junior: Jeanette Ottesen (1987) 26.45 2003-12-12
2012 Champ Senior: Jeanette Ottesen (1987) 25.62
Herning 2013 Time Standard: 26.48

  7. Lise-Lotte Larsen Bentin (1994) 27.57

  8. Amalie Mikkelsen (1997) 27.58

Prediction

A sure win for Jeanette Ottesen, the others should focus on beating 26.48 and each other.

Men’s 4×100 freestyle and Women’s 4×100 medley

Not a qualifying events per se, but the first swimmers could maybe qualify for a relay.
