Guided by Hackett’s coach Denis Cotterell at the same Gold Coast pool, Harrison last night became the second fastest 17-year-old in the history of the 1500m freestyle.
Harrison’s 14min51.02sec is quicker than Hackett’s 14:51.70 when he won the 1998 world championship in Perth.

“At the 500, it was starting to hurt and at the 1000, but then the motivation of getting under 15 minutes over-rode the pain,” he said. “You just have to tell yourself you are not hurting, you are not hurting and push through it. That’s what we train for.”
Mack Horton also managed his first ever sub-15 time, just missing the Barcelona 2013 qualification time for the Australian team by 1.36 seconds. See The Sydney Morning Herald
