How Tanc Sade took up freediving to impress a girl and ended up Australian champion

Sade is a newcomer to the sport, having only started competitive freediving a year ago in pursuit of, all things, a girl. He’s also an Australian champion.

“She had an app on her phone and said a warm-up would be a 2-minute, 45-second breath hold,” he says, pausing.

“That is a pretty substantial breath hold.

“Now, I was ready to pass out before I let this girl beat me. Unbeknown to me this girl was a US national record holder on the US freediving team.

“I didn’t know anything; I just thought she was cute.”

Sade reached the 2min 45sec target and the rest is history.
